The
Ciudad Universitaria: Cultural Patrimony of Humanity
The
best virtue of the Ciudad Universitaria of Caracas is the outstanding
quality of its architecture. Its historical value resides in the
statement of universal themes united by modern architecture along
with the acknowledgment that this time period contains elements
specificly unique to our human condition. The Ciudad Universitaria
was declared a Venezuelan National Heritage site in the year 2000,
and a World Cultural Patrimony of Humanity site by the United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2001,
for the following reasons:
"The
Ciudad Universitaria of Caracas constitutes one of the best examples
of it's time, in the world, of a university campus conceived through
the joining together of a range of architecture, designed integrally
by the architect within the modernist ideas of the years 1940s and
50s, and which foresaw so well the future progress of the nation."
"In
the combined areas of the Ciudad Universitaria of Caracas the blending
of architecture and urban space constitute an artwork of great importance,
significance and status, the complete fulfillment of this architect,
the most eminent in our nation's history, Carlos Raúl Villanueva." |
